Dog Couture & Dog Fashion

“In many countries, dogs are now considered to be part of the family, participating in every aspect of daily life. It is therefore essential that a dog fits into the lifestyle of its owner. As fashion is a basic part of everyday life, it is not surprising that dogs often have their own wardrobes filled with suitable outfits for society and cultural events, as well as day-to-day wear. When comparing dog couture and fashion with fashion more generally, it is interesting to consider the role played by culturally specific traditions.”

This article is a journey to dog fashion and couture creations, into a fascinating world of fabrics, colours and designs in Mexico, Japan, USA, Sweden and the UK. New perspectives and insights are offered in the analysis of these expressions of cultural and national traditions. It provokes further interest in the cultural relevance of dog fashion and in how we live together with dogs.
