ABOUT

Social Anthropologist – Specialised Journalist (Fashion, Textiles and Culture) – Author

Dr. Birgitta Huse

As a social anthropologist, I am fascinated by people and what they do. I am especially interested in fashion, textiles, arts and crafts, cultural change and tourism. Besides my regional focus on Mexico, international and worldwide connections and developments call my attention.
I think life is full of manifold opportunities which are waiting to be discovered.
I love to research and write about a range of things for others – be it in English, German or Spanish, combining my expert knowledge, my experience and versatility with unconventional thinking.

My aim is to:

  • widen perceptions
  • arouse curiosity and interest
  • inspire joyful reflection
  • provoke different points of view and new thoughts
  • stimulate creative activity in designing ones life
  • encourage participation in societal dialogue especially with regards to engaging with and speaking about distinct “foreign” cultural expressions and values

Overall my work is an ongoing expedition. I offer it to everyone who wants to curiously travel with me through their own and others’ everyday life, reflecting on different perspectives and changing viewpoints. In so doing, I encourage gaining new insights and being active – at the same time doing all this with joy.

During my many years of working as an author and publisher, as lecturer at universities, in concept development and as trainer in child and adult education, I have always focused on a social anthropological perspective. At the same time, in my opinion, an interdisciplinary perspective is the perfect way to develop and exchange unusual and inspiring ideas for projects that are useful for many people.

Already as a teenager, I loved to travel and communicate with lots of people with different cultural backgrounds and ideas about life. It is therefore no surprise that I studied Social Anthropology at the Universities of Tübingen, London (SOAS) and Freiburg/Br. (Germany and England). The background for my PhD degree about the change of textile culture under the influence of tourism was my fieldwork in 1989/90 in southern Mexico (San Juan Chamula, Chiapas). Since 1989 I regularly research in Mexico, also supported by the Mexican National Council of Science and Technology CONACYT as well as the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD.

A colibrí (hummingbird) represents:

• dazzling colours
• the art of flying
• an existence fuelled by high-energy aliment
• Aztec and Mayan beliefs

I am offering accordingly:

• appealing information (put in a nutshell and substantial at the same time)
• unusual perspectives on the ‘ingredients’ of daily life (‘Art’ of Social Anthropology)
• inspiring food for thought
• specialist knowledge about Mexico

Who for?

• editors who want their readers to enjoy inspiring well-researched and informative reading (such as magazines, (professional) journals, books)
• curious individuals who like to explore
• people that are interested in different ways of life and cultural creativity
• anyone interested in collaborating is welcome to contact me with their idea
